Diesel Price Swings: Is That Cheaper Fuel Stop Worth the Detour?

A lower diesel price can hide extra miles and lost time. Compare pump savings with the full detour before choosing your next truck fuel stop.

A cheaper sign at the pump is easy to notice. The cost of getting to it can be harder to see.

Late-summer diesel data shows why fuel planning deserves attention. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a national average on-highway diesel price of $5.599 per gallon for August 31, 2026, following $5.652 on August 24. These are dated national benchmarks, not current quotes for an individual truck stop. Source: EIA weekly diesel prices

For a driver buying a substantial amount of fuel, even a small difference can matter. But the right comparison includes the trip to the pump and the return to the route.

Calculate the detour before chasing the discount

Suppose one stop offers a hypothetical 15-cent discount on a 120-gallon purchase. The apparent saving is $18.

If reaching that stop adds 18 total miles and the truck averages 6 miles per gallon, the detour consumes about 3 gallons. At an illustrative $5.60 per gallon, that is $16.80 in extra fuel. Only $1.20 remains before allowing for time, wear, or any purchase fees.

Actual results depend on your truck, route, fuel price, and discount terms. The useful habit is to compare the entire stop, rather than the posted price alone.

Make one stop serve the trip

A fuel stop may fit better when it also offers the services you already need. Review access for your vehicle, the direction of travel, and whether the stop sits before or after a difficult interchange. Check the actual price and any fleet-card terms with the provider.

Keep enough fuel margin to handle an unavailable pump or a changed route. A plan that relies on arriving nearly empty leaves little room for a closure or unexpected delay.

At the end of the week, compare planned purchases with actual receipts and mileage. Repeated detours to chase small discounts may be costing more than they save.

Find candidates in Highway Miles

Highway Miles displays fuel and truck-stop locations along the navigation map. Use it to identify candidates, then verify prices and access separately.

Choose the stop that works for the whole trip. Sometimes the better fuel decision is the one that keeps you closer to your planned route.
