Highway Miles is proud to be featured in Commercial Carrier Journal, one of the trucking industry’s leading publications.
The article, published September 14, 2026, highlights how Highway Miles was created to give commercial drivers a simpler way to plan routes, navigate safely, and manage the information they need while driving.
Built by a Truck Driver and a Technology Professional
Highway Miles was created by Robert Phillips, a working truck driver with a professional background in technology, touchscreen interfaces, and complex control systems.
After getting behind the wheel, Robert experienced the same problem many truck drivers face: using several different apps and devices just to complete one trip.
Drivers might use one system for commercial truck navigation, another for satellite imagery and Street View, another for weather, and additional tools for parking, fuel, or trip planning.
Highway Miles was created to bring those essential tools together in one truck-focused navigation app.
Robert’s son, Justin Phillips, joined the project as the lead developer and software architect. Justin left his programming career in 2025 to help build the platform full time, while Robert continued testing Highway Miles on real routes from the cab of his truck.
That father-and-son development process allows features to be tested in real-world trucking conditions instead of relying only on a computer or laboratory environment.
One App for Commercial Truck Navigation
Highway Miles is a free commercial truck GPS and route-planning app available for iOS and Android.
The app is designed around the needs of professional drivers and supports truck-specific routing based on important vehicle information, including:
Vehicle height
Weight
Length
Axles
Trailer information
Cargo
Hazmat settings
Highway Miles also brings several frequently used driver tools together in one place, including:
Unlimited-stop route planning
Stop reordering and route optimization
Offline maps
Live weather and radar
Traffic and incident information
Low-clearance awareness
Spanish-language support
Street View access
Route-through and avoid-route controls
Parking, fuel, and weigh-station information
Route sharing
The goal is to reduce the amount of app switching required during a trip while helping drivers make better decisions before and during their routes.
Free Truck GPS Without a Required Subscription
Highway Miles is free to use, with no required subscription for the core navigation experience.
The free phone app is ad-supported. Drivers who prefer an ad-free experience can choose the optional $5.99/month Ad-Free plan, which removes in-app advertising. Ad placement can vary by app version; this is not a promise that every driver sees only a small banner.
The released phone-navigation tools described here do not require that subscription. Downloaded maps are different from complete offline routing: new route calculation, rerouting and live services may still need connectivity.
Designed Around Real Driver Problems
Many professional drivers already combine multiple navigation systems. A commercial GPS may be used for truck-safe routing, while Google Maps or another service may be used to inspect satellite imagery, Street View, or a difficult delivery location.
Highway Miles was designed to make that workflow more convenient by combining truck navigation, route planning, weather information, destination tools, and other trip resources within one platform.
The app is also designed to keep drivers from spending unnecessary time interacting with a phone while moving. The long-term goal is to make navigation more useful while minimizing distractions behind the wheel.
Continued Development Based on Real-World Testing
Highway Miles remains under active development. New features are planned and released based on feedback from real routes and real delivery conditions.
The CCJ article discusses several areas of continued development, including:
Expanded 511 road-condition data
Weather-based route planning
Additional traffic and road-condition information
Toll information
Fuel-card integrations
Lodging and hotel options
Artificial intelligence assistance
Voice activation
Smarter recommendations based on a driver’s previous routes
Highway Miles is being developed as a long-term platform for commercial drivers, not simply as another basic map application.
