RV Low-Clearance Planning: Know Your Height Before Choosing a Route
Start with accurate dimensions, review restrictions and use free RV navigation as a planning aid.
RV low-clearance planning begins with knowing your actual travel height. Before searching for an RV GPS that avoids low bridges, make sure the profile describes the rig you are driving, including rooftop equipment and your current towing setup.
Highway Miles provides free RV navigation on its ad-supported phone plan, with no required subscription. Select RV mode and complete your vehicle profile so the route can consider the supported vehicle details and available restriction data.
Find the height of the RV in its travel configuration
Use your vehicle and equipment documentation as a starting point, then confirm the actual overall height through an appropriate measurement process or a qualified RV professional. Do not climb onto the roof or improvise a risky measurement just to complete an app profile.
Account for fixed rooftop equipment and additions such as air conditioners, antennas or storage accessories. Recheck after modifications. For a trailer, confirm the travel configuration with the intended tow vehicle and hitch setup.
Keep a clearly labeled height note where the driver can refer to it while stopped. Record both feet-and-inches and metric units if your itinerary crosses a border. Conversion errors and confusing inches with decimal feet can create avoidable mistakes.
Enter an accurate RV profile
Complete every relevant field the app provides, including height, length and the requested weight information. Use the appropriate loaded configuration and units. Read field labels carefully: an overall towing-combination length and a trailer's body length are different measurements.
Check the selected profile before every trip, particularly if the same phone is also used in a passenger car or truck. Never lower a measurement to make a desired route appear. If an app cannot represent your setup correctly, resolve that limitation before relying on its route.
What RV GPS low-bridge planning can and cannot do
Vehicle-aware navigation can compare supported profile information with mapped restrictions. This is a useful starting point for spotting unsuitable roads before departure, but it depends on both the entered data and the information available to the routing system.
Garmin's vehicle-profile guidance makes the same important distinction: camper routing uses vehicle characteristics, while incomplete map information can limit warnings and route recommendations. No navigation platform establishes clearance at every possible obstruction.
Think beyond road bridges. Your arrival plan may involve a fuel canopy, campground gate, tree cover or parking structure. A route to an address does not certify every feature inside the property.
Review RV height restrictions before the travel day
Review the full route and identify any tunnel, restricted road or uncertain approach.
Check the responsible road authority's current restriction information.
Ask the destination about the designated entrance and any height or length limits.
Choose an alternative before entering an uncertain road.
Follow current signs and directions on the ground.
A familiar road may have changed because of construction or other work. Treat an unexpected restriction as new information requiring a new decision, even if you used that road on an earlier trip.
Use Google Street View to identify questions, not measure clearance
Highway Miles can open available Google Street View imagery to help you preview the approach. Look for where a canopy, gate or narrowing appears in relation to the entrance and exit. Use those observations to ask the property for current details.
Street View is not a measurement tool or live inspection. A photograph's perspective cannot establish that your roof equipment will clear an obstruction. Choose a different site or approach when the operator cannot confirm the information you need.
Will an RV navigation app avoid every low bridge?
No. Accurate dimensions and available map data support planning, but current signs, road conditions and your judgment remain essential. Do not enter an obstruction when clearance is uncertain.
What should I do if a low-clearance sign conflicts with my route?
Follow the sign. Stop safely before the restricted area if possible, avoid an improvised maneuver in traffic and obtain an appropriate alternative or assistance. Do not continue because the app says to proceed.
Is RV-profile navigation free in Highway Miles?
Yes. Highway Miles' phone navigation is free and ad-supported. The optional Ad-Free plan is available if you prefer to remove advertisements.
