RV Trip Budget: Fuel, Campsites and Navigation Costs
Build a transparent travel budget and see where free RV navigation fits.
A practical RV trip budget starts with mileage, fuel use and overnight costs. Add the smaller expenses next, then leave room for changes. Clear assumptions are more useful than a single “average trip cost” that may not resemble your rig or itinerary.
One cost you can keep at zero is the navigation subscription. Highway Miles offers free RV navigation on its ad-supported phone plan with no required subscription. Optional Ad-Free removes advertising.
Calculate fuel from your own travel setup
Use this planning formula: trip miles ÷ expected miles per gallon × estimated price per gallon = fuel budget. Include sightseeing miles and likely detours, not just the direct distance between home and the campground.
Base fuel economy on your loaded RV or towing setup when possible. If you have limited experience with it, use a conservative planning assumption and update it after the trip. Use current local prices when you make the real budget; the example below is illustrative.
For diesel rigs, consider any other travel-related consumables that apply. Generator use, propane and a separate sightseeing vehicle can create costs outside the main driving calculation.
Add campsite costs and the extras
Use the actual quote for each stay. Check taxes, booking charges, extra-vehicle or pet fees, and any metered utilities that apply. A posted nightly starting rate may not be the total payable for your dates and site.
Then list food, admissions, tolls, parking, laundry and other expenses you expect. Separate trip-specific costs from regular ownership costs such as insurance, storage and financing so you understand what the budget includes.
An illustrative seven-night RV road-trip budget
The following numbers are examples for explaining the arithmetic. They are not current fuel quotes, campground offers or a claim about typical RV spending.
Driving fuel: 1,200 miles ÷ 8 mpg = 150 gallons. At an assumed $3.50 per gallon, fuel costs $525.
Campsites: 7 nights × an assumed all-in $55 per night = $385.
Food allocation: $210.
Admissions, parking and other planned charges: $100.
Highway Miles phone navigation: $0 on the free, ad-supported plan.
Planned subtotal: $1,220.
Illustrative 10% buffer: $122.
Total planning amount: $1,342.
The buffer is a planning choice, not a promise that it will cover a breakdown or emergency. Add the costs relevant to your trip, such as rental charges, maintenance, propane, mobile data or pet care. These are not all included in the sample.
Check how changing assumptions affects the budget
In the example, each additional 100 miles at the same 8 mpg and $3.50 per gallon adds $43.75 in driving fuel. An extra campsite night at the assumed rate adds $55 before any additional food or activities.
Small route changes can therefore affect more than the odometer. Compare the whole cost of an option: mileage, extra nights, tolls and the time needed to travel comfortably. Do not accept an unsuitable road just to reduce the estimate.
Use a free RV route planner to organize the day
With Highway Miles, select RV mode, enter your profile and plan the route with fuel and rest stops. Keep your budget calculation in a separate note or worksheet; this guide does not describe an in-app expense tracker or promise live fuel-price comparisons.
Free RV navigation can remove a required navigation subscription from the plan. It does not make fuel, camping, mobile data or travel free. Compare the features you need and distinguish ongoing free navigation from a limited free trial when evaluating products.
Use Google Street View before paying for a site
Investigate available views of the campground approach and entrance through Highway Miles, then ask the property about the exact site's usable size and arrival instructions. This can help you identify questions before choosing between otherwise similar options.
Street View is not live and does not guarantee site fit. Confirm the current rate, fees, access and cancellation policy directly before booking. A cheaper site only works for the trip if you can reach it appropriately and it meets your needs.
How much should I budget for an RV road trip?
Calculate it from your mileage, actual fuel use, quoted campsite costs and planned activities. Keep a separate allowance for changes and use the example as a worksheet, not a price forecast.
Is Highway Miles a free RV route planner without a required subscription?
Yes. Highway Miles' ad-supported phone plan provides free RV navigation. An optional Ad-Free plan is available.
