Zion RV Restrictions in 2026: Plan Your Visit Around the New Limits

Check the current park limits, plan an appropriate approach and use free RV navigation to organize your trip.

Robert Phillips

Zion RV restrictions changed on June 7, 2026. If you are planning a national park trip, check your entire rig before making the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway part of your route. An RV that fits your campsite may still exceed the highway's limits.

Highway Miles offers free RV navigation to help you plan around your vehicle profile and organize fuel and rest stops. Pair that planning with the current National Park Service rules below; an app route does not override a posted restriction.

Where the Zion RV restrictions apply

The National Park Service's current large-vehicle guidance applies to the road between Canyon Junction and the East Entrance, including the tunnel. This is not a ban on RVs throughout Zion.

The NPS implementation announcement set June 7, 2026 as the start date. Advice about buying the old oversized-vehicle tunnel permit is therefore out of date for a fall 2026 visit.

Zion RV size limits: check every measurement

NPS lists these limits for a single vehicle without a trailer:

  • Length: 35 feet 9 inches.

  • Width: 7 feet 10 inches.

  • Height: 11 feet 4 inches.

  • Weight: 50,000 pounds.

For a combined vehicle, the total-length limit is 50 feet, and the trailer's hitch-to-rear-axle distance cannot exceed 26 feet. The same width, height and weight limits apply. Exceeding any limit disqualifies the vehicle from that highway section. Measurements include mirrors and attachments.

Do not rely on a model name or advertised floor-plan length. Make a travel-profile note with actual overall height, width, length, loaded weight and towing configuration. If a measurement is uncertain or close to a limit, resolve it with the park before departure.

RV alternate routes around Zion

Utah DOT's Zion-area route guidance identifies paved alternatives north and south of the park. The northern option uses I-15, SR-20 and US-89. The southern option uses SR-59, Arizona SR-389 and US-89.

UDOT warns that SR-14 and SR-143 are not recommended large-vehicle alternatives because of curves and grades. It also cautions against dirt-road shortcuts such as Sheep Bridge Road and Smithsonian Butte Road. Review the complete official guidance rather than accepting the first suggested shortcut.

Choose the alternative that fits your origin, destination, vehicle and current road conditions. Add the extra driving to your itinerary before booking a timed activity or promising an arrival time. A detour also changes where you may want to refuel or take a break.

Can a larger RV still visit Zion?

Yes, subject to the park's access rules. NPS describes limited South Entrance access for visitor-center parking when space is available, valid Zion Lodge reservations, permitted scenic-drive access in the shuttle off-season, and campground access when open. Confirm the applicable access and reservation details with the park.

Keep three decisions separate: where your RV can legally travel, where you can park it, and how you will reach the attraction after parking. A campground reservation is not permission to drive every park road. Check Zion's current conditions before departure and again near arrival.

Use Google Street View when choosing your base

Before choosing a campground outside the park, open available Google Street View imagery through Highway Miles. Find the actual entrance, note the approach direction and look for a second driveway that could be confused with check-in. Ask the campground which entrance it recommends for your exact rig.

Confirm the individual site's usable length, towing-vehicle parking and arrival instructions directly. Imagery may be old or stop at the public road; it cannot establish current clearance or campsite fit.

Build a Zion travel-day plan with free RV navigation

  1. Select RV mode in Highway Miles and complete the available profile fields for your loaded travel setup.

  2. Compare the planned approach with the current NPS restrictions and UDOT alternatives.

  3. Add a fuel stop before the restricted-road decision point and choose a backup stop.

  4. Save your campground instructions and park-access plan where you can read them without service.

  5. Follow current signs and staff directions even when they differ from navigation guidance.

Does an RV GPS guarantee compliance with the new Zion rules?

No. Do not assume any app has already incorporated every recent restriction. Check the actual road sequence against the official sources, and change the approach before you reach a road your rig cannot use.

Is Highway Miles free for RV owners?

Yes. Highway Miles provides free, ad-supported RV navigation on your phone with no required subscription. The optional Ad-Free plan removes advertising.
